Cenotes

The word cenote means "natural water well" and is a Spanish pronunciation of the Mayan word "dzonot". Cenotes, much like sinkholes, are formed when the limestone roofs of water filled subterranean caverns collapse. These mysterious places held an important role in ancient Mayan rituals which sometimes involved a human sacrifice to the Mayan rain god Chamol.

Cenotes can range from intricate water-filled subterranean cavern systems to deep surface ponds accessible to snorkelers. Divers, be prepared to recover your regulator quickly, because it may fall out when you gape in amazement at so much hidden beauty. The breathtaking sunken limestone formations in are a sight seen by only a few divers privileged enough to enter the cenotes. Swim between shafts of sunlight that penetrate through openings in the limestone ceiling, creating a labyrinth of light and shadows. The water is so clear visibility is often 200ft., providing a powerful impression that you are suspended in mid-air!
