Marine Conservation in Action: Our Quarterly Reef Restoration Report

The ocean calls to us, and as divers and advocates, we’re answering. At ScubaCaribe, we’re excited to share the impressive results from the first quarter of the Coribbean Reefs Project, an inter-institutional collaboration with the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc (PNCOIMPCYPN). Our goal is clear: to strengthen conservation in the coral ecosystems of the Mexican Caribbean.

Getting to Work: Our Reef Restoration Methodology

Launched on April 11, 2025, the project focuses on essential tasks for caring for coral nurseries in a protected natural area. Our dedicated team performs primary maintenance, including underwater cleaning and monitoring the survival of coral colonies. This process manually removes competitors like macroalgae, sponges, and fire coral.

Monitoring is a vital part of our methodology. We analyze the number of live and dead colonies and assess the potential for nurseries to be pruned and restocked. In this first quarter, we intervened in three modular nurseries across two sites: Chitales and Bajo Pepito.

Measurable Impact: Key Achievements in Marine Conservation

Our team’s passion is reflected in the results we’ve achieved. Over six field trips, 43 participants contributed 4,036 minutes of diving.

Here are our key achievements:

  • 3 nurseries preserved.
  • We assisted 822 corals.
  • We completed 85% of our maintenance goals.

We achieved an impressive average survival rate of 83%.

Looking to the Future: The Next Steps of Our Project

The success of this first quarter motivates us to keep moving forward. We will continue cleaning and monitoring the Chitales and Bajo Pepito sites for the next phase. Our work will culminate in pruning, transplanting, and planting new corals.

At ScubaCaribe, we are committed to coral reef conservation and are grateful to everyone who has joined us on this crucial mission. Download the official full report for more details on our methodology and the project’s full impact.
